    Statement

In my late teens and early twenties, I studied Art History and Modern 20th Century art and experimented with oil paint working in an abstracted realist style. A talent for draughtsmanship led me into a successful career as a Building Surveyor.

In the 1970’s I began a lifetime’s study of Yoga, Meditation and the nature of Consciousness. I have taught Yoga and Meditation for the last 30 years. For me Art is no less a journey of self-discovery. Abstract painting provides the perfect vehicle for an outer expression of this inner quest.

I always seek  to deepen my understanding of colour, form and line in a painterly manner. Like most artists, I take inspiration from the natural world, especially landscape - rivers, valleys and the wild places such as Dartmoor and the coast. I am in awe of nature. However I am increasingly drawn to a greater simplicity in my work. But just as in the stillness and silence of meditation, it seems that out of such apparent simplicity, there arises the most poetic and profound experience. Colour becomes the form and the line and edge interact with the space around the work to display it’s intent for the observer. Working with shaped canvases allows further expression through the subtlety of the curved line.

Guided by an ‘inner sense’, I continue to develop the expressive, emotive, symbolic, spiritual and contemplative qualities of my art.
